JustFOOD Halifax Network

Welcome to the JustFOOD Halifax Network! We are in the process of launching the network and will have more to say soon. Watch this space to find out what we heard during our “soft launch” event on June 11, 2026, and to learn about next steps.

Our Roots

Formed in 2013, the Halifax Food Policy Alliance (HFPA) was a multisectoral partnership of individuals and organizations with a common vision of a Halifax: where no one is hungry and everyone has nutritious food that they enjoy, for generations to come, sustained by local producers. The HFPA was co-chaired by Nova Scotia Health- Public Health and the Ecology Action Centre and involved numerous community partners – all working towards developing the JustFOOD Action Plan for the Halifax Region.

The Municipality (HRM) committed to co-lead the development of the Action Plan in partnership with the HFPA in December 2019 and the JustFOOD Action Plan and its 56 recommendations for positive food system change were endorsed by Halifax Regional Council in March of 2023. In February of 2024, Council endorsed the JustFOOD Implementation Strategies for Year 1 and 2, which recommended the creation of a new coordinating body to oversee the implementation of the Action Plan.

The JustFOOD Halifax Network is that new body – a collective of organizations and interested individuals who will uplift diverse food work while speaking with one voice for food justice in the Halifax Region

Broader Connections

JustFOOD is based on the recognition that we all have to work together for positive change.  We are connected to these broader organizations who are leading the way in collaborative food action: Food Secure Canada, Food Communities Network, Milan Urban Food Policy Pact.
